Is Drug Treatment Mandatory After a DUI?
It is common to get drug treatment after a DUI conviction. In most cases, drug treatment is just a condition given by the court during the verdict or sentence stating. While in other cases, defendants undergo drug rehabilitation programs as an advice of their legal representative to prove to court their sincerity and desire for change after being charged with DUI. In minor cases, drug rehabilitation is just a nudge in the back in order for the defendant to realize that he or she needed a change in his or her outlook in life. If one of the punishments for a DUI offense is to undergo drug treatment, it is essential that you face it broadmindedly despite your belief that you are not a drug addict for the most part. You can use the learning insights and strategies you receive in your program as a tool for your growth.
Drug rehabilitation is yet another option or an additional punishment for DUI offenders especially in multiple offenses. More often than not, drug treatment after a DUI arrest or conviction is almost automatic. The very purpose is to educate you and not to send solely send you outside your comfort zone.
It is an idea of many courts to send offenders of drunk driving to expose them to values and principles of the society to that they may know the nature of their offense and the kind of effect it has in people’s lives and community. Usually, defense attorneys send their clients to undergo a drug rehabilitation program as recognition of the mistake done by the defendant and to show their contrition.
However, issues arise when the defendant views the rehabilitation as personally degrading because he or she believes he or she doesn’t have any drinking or drug addiction problems. They don’t label themselves as addicts and therefore have hostility towards the entire rehabilitation program as well as in the groups.
After a DUI arrest and you find yourself being advised to attend a drug treatment program, the best option for you to get it over with easily and quickly is to just go with the flow and get along with the treatment program even if you are not an addict. It is necessary for you to undergo such rehabilitation in order for your case to be dismissed easily or to cut down unnecessary steps or consequences you will meet.
It is not important whether you are addict or not. What’s important is that you understand the values and principles that the rehabilitation centers uphold and learn your lesson well. You don’t have to argue or convince others that you are not an addict to take the punishment off your shoulders because chances are you will only make matters worse.
